
{"id":734,"date":"2011-03-13T16:04:55","date_gmt":"2011-03-13T22:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cerebral-palsy-medicalmalpractice.com\/blog\/?p=734"},"modified":"2011-03-13T16:04:55","modified_gmt":"2011-03-13T22:04:55","slug":"west-virginia-hospital-overradiated-ct-brain-scan-patients-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cerebral-palsy-medicalmalpractice.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/west-virginia-hospital-overradiated-ct-brain-scan-patients-report-says.html","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia Hospital Overradiated CT Brain Scan Patients, Report Says"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>It appears that a hospital screwed up\u00a0doing CT brain scans, even after federal regulators put out\u00a0warnings telling medical facilities\u00a0to be more careful performing that very procedure.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Cabell Huntington Hospital in\u00a0West Virginia\u00a0is the facility that\u00a0overradiated patients during CT\u00a0scans for more than a year\u00a0after\u00a0the Food and Drug Administration had already issued an alert after uncovering similar incidents regarding that particular scan,\u00a0according to The New York Times.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/06\/health\/06radiation.html?scp=1&amp;sq=overradiated%20brain%20scans&amp;st=cse\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/06\/health\/06radiation.html?scp=1&amp;sq=overradiated%20brain%20scans&amp;st=cse<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0The Times dug up records that disclosed that\u00a0the West Virginia hospital had allegedly been overdosing\u00a0patients with radiation\u00a0until the end of November.<\/p>\r\n<p>At least 20 of the patients, who were overradiated\u00a0as they were checked for strokes, have retained a lawyer. These patients got a letter from the hospital saying that they had been given too much radiation.<\/p>\r\n<p>The procedure in question is a CT brain perfusion scan, and issues with it first came to light in summer 2009 at\u00a0Cedars-Sinai\u00a0Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to The Times.\u00a0The FDA launched a study on why some patients were getting too much radiation during the procedure.<\/p>\r\n<p>The FDA issued its report on the matter last November, finding that manufacturers needed to better train medical staff to use the complex equipment used in the CT scans. The report also recommended that the CT machines have a better sysem to tell technicians when\u00a0the radiation they are dispensing is at too high a level.<\/p>\r\n<p>In one case in West Virginia cited by The Times, Marcie Iseli, 36,\u00a0lost sections of her hair after having a CT procedure in November. She went for the CT because she had been feeling numbness on one side of her face. According to The Times, Iseli had been given 10 times too much\u00a0radiation, and felt nauseated after her CT.<\/p>\r\n<p>The manufacturer who made the CT equipment is G.E.\u00a0Medical Systems.
