Yearly MRIs, in concert with\u00a0breast exams and mammograms, apparently can mean the difference between life and death for women with a high risk of breast cancer, according to a new study.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0The New York Times reported this week\u00a0on the findings, which could spare\u00a0women with a high risk of breast cancer from taking the drastic step of having a mastectomy to circumvent the deadly disease.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

For years doctors have suggested that women at a high risk for breast cancer\u00a0get both a yearly mammogram and an\u00a0 MRI, which is better at detecting tumors than the mammogram, according to The Times. But there had been\u00a0no scientific evidence that the combination of both tests could actually save lives.<\/p>\r\n

The new study is the first to\u00a0track the survival of high-risk women who get MRIs.\u00a0The research\u00a0determined that following six years of follow-up, 93 percent of mutation\u00a0carriers were still living, versus 73 percent\u00a0still alive at five years in other studies, The Times reported.<\/p>\r\n

And all the women at a high risk due to their family history\u00a0were alive after six years, according to the latest study.<\/p>\r\n

That research was published online in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, and was led by\u00a0Dr. Jan G.M. Klijn, an emeritus professor at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.\u00a0The study tracked 2,157 high-risk\u00a0participants in the Netherlands.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
